"tribes of london"
this personal project is the result of a desire to find and photograph people who belonged to the remnants of london “tribes” i had known in my youth. this proved a little more difficult than i had thought it would be as a lot of these groups were so disparate and didn’t have the energy I remembered. this forced a change in the remit and i decided to look for current tribes that may or may not belong to groups i had known in the past. the original intent was to shoot conventional portraits but as time went on i felt that i wanted to do something i hadn’t seen before and decided to shoot from above and create a pattern out of the photos. this involved using a technique i learned as a clothing designer of creating a step and repeat pattern (easier said than done!). the idea was to show the cohesiveness of the tribes in a very visual way.
the project was shot on a hasselblad and won an award from hasselblad and digital photographer magazine.
